I raced into the front hall with Mo-Mo at my heels. I almost yelled with relief when I found Kizzy alone and perfectly fine, her hands and face pressed against the window by the front door.
“Kizzy, you almost gave me a heart attack!” I exclaimed. “Why did you scream like that?”
Kizzy whirled around. Her face was shining.
“Jax, come see. Come see!”
I stepped next to her and looked where one small finger was pointing, out the window and up at the sky.
It was a spectacular double rainbow. The clouds had parted overhead and a perfectly brilliant arc spanned the sky down to the mountain. Higher in the sky was a second, fainter rainbow, its flawless twin. I’d never seen a rainbow so vivid or so bright, and I’d definitely never seen a double rainbow. It almost looked too real to be real, like someone had painted it there.
Kizzy yanked open the door and stepped outside to get a better look. Mo-Mo and I followed her.
I caught my breath at the same moment Mo-Mo lifted his nose to the sky and barked three times.
One of the twin rainbows seemed to end partway up the mountain, not too far from the spot where our property ended and the woods began. The fainter rainbow’s end was clearly visible. It stretched in an unbroken arch from the sky to the roof of Tangyeling.
A ja, I heard Yeshi say in my mind, pleased that I remembered the Tibetan word for rainbow. A good omen, Yeshi had said, a sign. But what did it mean? Maybe it was an omen that the monastery was safe. Or maybe it was a sign that they needed me — maybe Tangyeling was trying to get my attention!
Mo-Mo whined and nudged me with his nose, then trotted away across the yard toward a small figure marching toward the woods. Kizzy! I hadn’t even noticed she’d left my side, I had been so busy looking at the sky.
“Kiz, come back!” I called. Kizzy stopped and turned toward me. Mo-Mo was already at her side.
“I just wanna see the rainbow’s end!” Kizzy said. “We can find a pot of gold or see lettercons!”
I strode across the grass toward my sister, opening my mouth to say the word no and take her back inside. Mo-Mo had raised his head and was looking up at the rainbow. I didn’t know dogs could see rainbows. And yet this dog seemed to be not only able to see them but to smell them too. What did a rainbow smell like?
“It’s right there, Jax, see? The end of the rainbow is right there!”
Kizzy tugged my arm, her voice pleading, as she pointed toward the woods at the end of our yard. It really did look like the brightest of the rainbows was coming down right there, somewhere in the middle of the trees. It was eerie and beautiful. Everything seemed dreamlike. With dark rain clouds still covering most of the sky, it looked like the clouds had parted just so the sun could shine down on the mountain.
